    N. N. Strakhov, a close friend of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, praised its "profound vitality." It is this profound vitality in Turgenev’s characters that carry his novel of ideas to its rightful place as a work of art and as one of the classics of Russian Literature.   They knew people in common, but never met. It was a series of near-misses. Dostoyevsky praised War and Peace and Anna Karenina greatly. Tolstoy read The House of the Dead and praised Dostoyevsky a lot, too. When Dostoyevsky died suddenly, Tolstoy.

The greatest novel ever written according to top authors and laymen alike, Anna Karenina is the masterpiece which paints a glaringly vivid picture of contemporary Russian society. Rival of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky in delineating the Russian Dostoyevsky, Ivan Turgenev () was a voice of democratic moderation, a novelist who pictured the attractions and dangers of revolutionary extremes in a delicate, precise style.

The Giants of Russian Literature: Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Chekhov [Book + 7 CD set]Author: Lisa Knapp. Because I love literature, I bristle when I hear Russia described as my country's enemy. Certainly Vladimir Putin is our enemy, because he is a tyrant who murders journalists.

And certainly Donald Trump is our enemy, not only because he's a racist and a sexual predator and a con-man, but also because Vladimir Putin is clearly his role model, his idea of an effective leader.

Turgenev, unlike Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, lacked religious motives in his writings, representing the more social aspect to the reform movement. He was considered to be an agnostic. Tolstoy, more than Dostoyevsky, at first anyway, rather despised Turgenev. While traveling together in Paris, Tolstoy wrote in his diary, "Turgenev is a bore.".

It's hardly fair to compare her book with Joseph Frank's years-in-the-making life of Dostoevsky, but in terms of English language biographies, at least, Tolstoy. Both Dostoevsky and Tolstoy asserted that the essence of life cannot be found by relying on the intellect alone. Both Dostoevsky and Tolstoy understood that being true to the authentic rhythms of life means respecting the non-linear nature of life.
